Your info on William Hancock, Jr. b. 1675, has Wm. married to Elinor Durant 1691 and Elizabeth Spencer in 1692;  yet you have the death of Elinor as 1730 in Craven Co., the same year as the second wife, Elizabeth Spencer.

Robert Coleman

I’m a descendant of Robert Coleman through Lindsay Byrd Dickinson and Susan Harris Willis of Spotsylvania County , Va. The information that is listed regarding their children contains numerous errors - incorrect birth and death dates, incorrect names, incorrect birth order. It also lists only seven children when in fact there were eight, all of whom lived into adulthood, most into their 80s and 90s.

Grover Bradley

I saw your time line and the information is wrong on Grover Bradley, Becky Smithers, Mary Blondell & Norman Thomas Griffin. They have never been to Ca. in their lives. that is my Grandfather, Grandmother Aunt & Uncle.

Chapman S. Coleman

I just want to congratulate you on such a fine site. I did run across something that needs clarification, as I'd originally made a mistake with one of my ancestors when I first started doing research many years ago. I lived in Salt Lake City at the time and had visited the fine genealogy library that is there.

I had traced my ancestors back to Chapman S. Coleman, who married Mary Ann Carter of Lincoln County, Kentucky. I had run across an unpublished manuscript that had listed Chapman's parents as Meridith R. Coleman and Susan Dedman, as noted below. I then ran across an article in the Kentucky Genealogy Society (I believe) magazine that listed Chapman's parents as Covington Coleman and Lucy Day, also as noted below. It listed Mary Jane Carter as Chapman's sister, who both died on the same day.

I don't believe I had a date on the Meridith information, so I improperly made the assumption that Meridith was the father of my Chapman. The information in the genealogy magazine was from a state death roll, or something like that—coincidentally, the only year the state required that all deaths in the state need to be reported to the state, at least in that generation or time period, as near as I can remember. It may have been the only time.

Is it possible there were two Chapman Colemans who married two Mary Ann Carters, one generation apart? I know that's what you show, but then, I made the same mistake, too. That's not saying it's a mistake, but it would ease my conscience if I knew for sure there exists documentation that would show this.

Judge S. Bernard Coleman's (I think that was his name) fine book picked up where I left off in Kentucky, and his was well documented, I believe.

I'm very impressed with the work you've done putting together this website (http://colemangenealogy.ucan.us/index.htm). I can only imagine all the work that went into creating the site, let alone all the work you must have done to gather all the information together. I know how much work it took just to find what I've found on my individual line, let alone fourteen generations of lines. I applaud you. Keep up the good work.

Why do Mormons do Genealogy?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, usually referred to as Mormons, place great emphasis on genealogical research. This is because their Church doctrine states that "saving ordinances" (including baptism, confirmation, endowment, and sealing-marriage) must be made available to every individual who has ever lived. To make these ordinances available to people who did not have the opportunity while ... more >>>

How do I get started doing my genealogy?

First search your entire home, attic, basement, closets, trunks, shoeboxes and photo albums for clues. Then, talk to your whole family – Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents – to learn everything that they know. Only then, can you begin your research.

Now this is sound genealogical advice and in the world of search-based research, can obviously be quite helpful. The more you know, the more likely you are to get results. But it is a very tiny percentage of people who are willing to start with that level of effort. In an attempt to make family history available to the mainstream, we’ve provided for another (and so far globally more successful) method.

First, start with what you know. Create a tree with the things you remember. Don’t worry if there are holes – or you don’t have exact dates or locations. This will help give you a foundation to determine what you want to learn.

Then, invite your family to contribute what they know. Invite your Aunts, Uncles and Cousins to add to your tree online, fill in dates, tell stories, upload photos.

Then, come to Free Genealogy Online to fill in the gaps.
