He was then in charge of the Central church of Philadelphia till 1846, and in May of that year established the Spring Garden Church, of which he was pastor till his death. He was a trustee of Princeton for more than 50 years, and of the theological seminary there from its foundation. Honorary degree of D. D. from U. of S.C."

Sept. 17, 1851 in Morristown, NJ. m. Nov 23, 1813 in the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethtown by his brother, the Rev. John McDowell, to Jane Hay Kollock, dau. of Shephard Kollock & Susan Arnett, b. Nov 15, 1791, d. Nov. 29, 1867 aged 76 yrs. Both are buried in the Lamington Cemetery, Lamington, NJ. William A. McDowell entered the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1807 and graduated in 1809. He then entered the new Princeton Seminary and graduated with the first class. He later became a Trustee of Princeton Univ. He was licensed to preach Apr. 28th 1813, and was ordained at Bound Brook, NJ, Dec. 22, 1813. He left there Oct. 19th 1814 and was ordained at Morristown, NJ, Dec 13, 1814. Because of his health he left Morristown Oct. 23, 1823 going to Charleston, South Carolina, where he was installed Dec. 3, 1823 in the Charleston Union Presbyterian Church. In 1827, he received his D.D from Franklin College. In 18-- he was offered a professorship in the Theological Seminary at Columbia, SC, but did not accept. Then in 1833 he was made Moderator, and in September of that year he was appointed the Secretary of the Board of Domestic Missions of the Presbyterian Church and moved to Philadelphia. Because of poor health he resigned in the spring of 1850 and returned to the family homestead in Bedminster, now known as the 'Retreat', located on the North Branch of the Raritan River, between Larger Cross Road and Bunns Road, a mile and one half west of Pluckemin, and near Kline's Mills." The Presbyterian Re-Union Memorial Volume, 1837-1871, states that William Anderson McDowell was born and died in Lamington and that "He was exceedingly quiet and unobtrusive in his manner, but possessed an intellect of uncommon vigor and clearness with fine social feelings, and an earnest, devoted piety. He was withal an excellant preacher and pastor, and sustained honorably and usefully every relation."
