Birth/Marriage/Death/Burial: Ephraim McDowel of Bedminster Township and Some of His Descendeants, by Richard W. Cook, pgs 59-61: "He had a long illness resulting from disabilities contracted during the Civil War, and his gravestone is inscribed 'He gave his life for his country'. His wife is buried in an unmarked grave in her father's plot in the Bloomfield NJ Cemetery. At the age of sixteen Augustus W. McDowell graduated from Princeton Univ. and in 1840 graduated from the Medical College of Philadelphia (Univ. of Penns.) He established his medical practice in Somerset County near the family homestead called the 'Retreat' on the North Branch of the Raritan River, and resided there until his service in the Civil War. He joined the Lamington Presbyterian Church on Apr. 23, 1850, his wife having joined by certificate Dec. 20, 1845. Dr. McDowell was appointed Feb. 23, 1865 as Surgeon (Major) in the 6th Regiment, U.S. Vol. Hancock's Corps, and mustered into service Mar. 10, 1865 at Camp Stonemon, near Washington, D.C. While in the regular performance of his duties at Camp Stonemon, as Brigade Surgeon, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Army Corps, he contracted diarrhea which became chronic. In August 1865 he went with his regiment to Harrisburg, PA and was appointed Post Surgeon there. In January 1866 he was sent to Camp Fry, Washington, D.C. in charge of the hospital there, thence on duty at Alexander, VA, until discharged Apr. 23, 1866. In his application, Aug. 19, 1869 for an invalid pension, Dr. McDowell stated that he lived in the Township of Bloomsfield since his discharge attempting to practice as a physician, but that his disability had made him totally unfit to follow his profession, and would probably take his life. On Mar. 5, 1868 Dr. A.W. McDowell of Bloomfield Twsp. purchased a little over 1/2 acre of land on the south side of Canal St. (later known as Maple St), Bloomfield, for $2750; and on June 18, 1868 purchased some adjoining property for $400. On Dec. 11, 1871 A.W. McDowell of Bloomfield gave Power of Attorney to Wm. A. McDowell of Brooklyn. This was revoked Jany. 13, 1873. Dr. McDowell and his wife returned to the 'Retreat', the family homestead near Bedminster, Somerset Co, NJ. In 1875 they rejoined the Lamington Presby. Ch. by certificate, with their daughter Jane. Both Dr. McDowell and his wife Anna M.McDowell were extensive writers. He wrote on medical matters and local history, while she contributed many articles on 'Woman's Work', 'Children's Work', etc. to various local newspapers and magazines. Augustus W. McDowell of Bloomfield, NJ in his will dated Oct. 16, 1871 which was proved in Somerset County Mar. 18, 1878, names his wife Anna M. and children Jane K., William O., Frederick H., Charles E., and Anna L. On Apr. 23, 1878 Anna M. McDowell, widow, aged 56 years, applied for a pension as a wife of a soldier who had died from disabilities contracted while in service, as provided by the Act of Congress, July 14, 1862. On July 23, 1883 Charles E. McDowell, as executer of the estate of A.W. McDowell, conveyed the property in Bloomfield mentioned above, to Wm. O. McDowell of Newark, subject to a mortgage of $3,182.80. On Nov. 19, 1892 Anna M. McDowell, widow, of Montclair Twsp, sold property on Canal St., Bloomfield to Josephine T. McDowell of Newark for $300. On Apr. 24, 1894, most of the remaining property of Canal St., Bloomfield, was sold at a sheriff's sale to satisfy a mortgage given Nov. 16, 1876 by A.W. McDowell & A.M. McDowell; amount due $3,343.01. Then on May 10, 1898 another sheriff's sale, to satisfy a mortgage, was made on property on Maple St., formaly Canal St., Bloomfield, bought by Anna M.McDowell, dec'd, on Nov. 15, 1892"

Davis & Maria Foster...At his death Charles E. McDowell was living at 7 Irving St, East Orange, NJ, but had lived most of his life in Bloomfield having moved there as a lad. He was a banker, a road builder, a newspaper feature writer, and in later years an inspector attached to the office of the Federal Census of Manufacturers. He was associated with his brother William Osborne McDowell in the founding of the New Jersey Society which became the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), and he was past grand regent of the Royal Arcanum."

Obituary: Bloomfield, NJ, Herald News, 8 Jun 1951; Mrs. Edith McDowell Beeken, authority on the history of Bloomfield and named that town's outstanding citizen for 1948, died early yesterday in her home, 126 Willard Avenue, after an illness of two months. Mrs. Beeken was the wife of Axel V. Beeken, New York patent attorney. Born in Bloomfield, 75 years ago, Mrs. Beeken was given the annual outstanding citizen award at Independence Day celebration, 1949, by the Miles A. Suazer VFW Post of Bloomfield and Glen Ridge. The citation honored her for many services to the town, but singled out her duties as historian of Bloomfield World War II records for the New Jersey War Records Commission. Mrs. Beeken was a decendant of Thomas Davis, an original Bloomfield settler in 1670, and a member of the group of Puritans from Connecticut who founded Newark in 1666. Her great-grandfather, Joseph Davis, donated the land for Bloomfield's Town Green. Mrs. Beeken was a member of the Bloomfield Woman's Club, Major Joseph Bloomfield Chapter, DAR; Bloomfield Auxilliary of Montclair Community Hospital and the New Jersey Historical Society. She was active for more than a quarter of century in the former Town Improvement Association and was a member for five years of the town's motion picture censor board. She was chairman 12 years of the Infantile Paralysis Relief Board in Bloomfield and was a member of the town zoning board for three years. During World War I, Mrs. Beeken served on Liberty Loan, food and memorial tablet committees. In the campaign for women's suffrage, she was president of the Women's Political Union in that section. She was the author of a history of Bloomfield, and of "My House of Treasures", describing colonial furniture and antiques in her posession. She also wrote a radio script on General Joseph Bloomfield, for whom the town is named. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Beeken is survived by a son, Valdemar Beeken, of Bloomfield; a daughter, Mrs. Walter Young of Princeton; a brother, Stanley McDowell, of Passaic; four sisters, Mrs. N. Oliver Pierson, of East Orange, Mrs. George Rogers, of Camden, Mrs. Joseph Bragrass, of Norfolk, VA, and Mrs. Walter Gould, of Memphis, TN, and two grandchildren.

He was an active church worker and served as president of the Men's Club for ten years, and for fifteen years as Superintendent of the Sunday School of the Westminster Church in Lyndhurst, NJ. He removed from Lyndhurst to Rutherford, NJ in 1945."
